True to Yourself

Is your life just one long list of things to tick off?

Do you find yourself living in the future – thinking about all the things that you need to be doing or planning for times yet to come? If this sounds like you then how does this help you to live in the present?

You probably have that glazed-over look because you are not really listening to what is being said to you or asked of you. Or you feel that people never tell you stuff when in fact they did but you were so disconnected and preoccupied.

Are you missing out on the subtler things around you? Is this because you are too involved in your important stuff and overwhelmed by your to-do list?

Sadly, your connection to the here-and-now and to the people round about you disappears instantly, as soon as your mind starts dwelling on future events.

How authentic are you being to yourself? Are you living the life that you want or are you living the life that is expected of you in your circumstances? Are you on automatic pilot?

For me this can mean that you are living so much in your head that you disconnect from your feelings. This is a way of coping and of surviving sometimes because being authentic is too painful an experience.

What does authentic really mean?

Definition: (in existentialist philosophy) relating to or denoting an emotionally appropriate, significant, purposive, and responsible mode of human life.

Being true to yourself as a woman is not easy, given the roles that we are expected to play. We learn to switch from being super confident and capable career woman to mother, lover, sister and friend all within the blink of an eye. Multitasking like you would not believe. But how can you stay authentic in all the roles that are expected of you?

Chakra Man

One answer is to make sure that you are grounded in the here-and-now.

If you are not feeling grounded, this means you are probably living too much in your head and need to connect with your heart.

The yogis say to stay grounded your base chakra needs to be balanced. Your chakra is just an energy centre. The colour that relates to this part of your body is red. So maybe wearing red (knickers or socks!), having a foot massage or going bare foot on the beach or taking a walk in the park helps. When was the last time you did any of these things?

Some of us fear being grounded as we believe that our human experience will be worse. In fact the opposite is true. Living in our head means that we are of no earthly use!

Top tips
Give your full concentration to what you are doing in the moment, for example, if you are on the phone, be with the person that you are talking to. This means no reading emails at the same time, this is disrespectful to the other person and they hear it in your voice. Make your calls at a time you know you can give your full attention.
