Purple patches!
I am a mad keen golfer. With the weather we have been having it has been golfing heaven! I love it as I can escape, get some exercise and enjoy some chat with different people plus I get to be in nature.
To date my season has been good. In June I had a real “purple patch“. I had a few really good rounds and also enjoyed playing some team matches which I have not managed to do for a few years.
I began to think about what was different this year, given that my belief is that golf is partly talent but more importantly a head game.
What I am about to tell you is sad but “true”. I know that it is proven that athletes – not me – rehearse running the race or winning the prize in their heads as much as when they are doing their training. So the odd night when it has taken me longer to get back to sleep, I play the course in my head! I do it hole by hole and I see myself playing the perfect game. So when I actually get on the course to play I have already done it in my head. Brilliant!
That’s the first part but the second part is all about a new gadget that my other half bought me at the end of May. I am a real techie and this is right up my street. I now have a fancy GPS watch that gives me accurate measurements on how far I need to go to reach the green. As a result I now have a much better idea of what club to hit and how far I need to hit it so now and again I take a shot less.
With a couple of simple techniques I can honestly say that I am more focused and enjoying my golf this year. The sunny weather has just been an added bonus.
However, my fun on the golf course has made me think that I am redeploying my Kinesiology training in my own way. It is not easy for me to do an “all singing and dancing” comprehensive session on myself the way I can when I have a client in front of me. However, I am using similar principles.
A Kinesology session takes the form of working with the client’s goal. When somebody comes for a “balance*” it is becomes something in life is not working for them. That can be in the way of a physical pain in the body or a pain because of the way your are reacting or thinking about something that is going on in your life right now.
I realised that the visualisation that I was doing in bed, that I either do with clients in a session or as homeplay, was to help me reach my goal. And the GPS watch was a way of checking to see how far away I was from the goal i.e. the green/hole. It recalculated distances as I moved ever closer to the hole and gave me bang up to date information.
My example was a simple, light hearted way to show you that you can reach your goal.
But technological gadgets and gizmos are not always applicable because they are simply not practical in all circumstances or can’t do the job for you.
When I work with clients the longest time in the “balance*” is to actually verbalise what the goal is. Invariably when you come along to your appointment it is because you are in pain or feeling stuck. When you are in this place it can be really hard to find a goal that is the positive opposite of how or what you might be feeling. If this sounds like you then I would recommend you book a session so that I can help you find your “purple patch”!
*A Kinesiology session is called a balance as our approach is holistic and we seek to balance the body physically, emotionally, mentally, chemically/nutritionally and spiritually.
