The sun is out and it’s holiday time!

Summer in Glasgow and the sun is finally here at last!

Like most people I have been taking every opportunity to get out into it when I can. You can easily see the difference it makes to everybody’s mood and the heat naturally forces us to slow our pace down just a little bit. Ahh…..

Last night I was heading off to a networking dinner doing my best to dress for the weather. Our guest speaker entertained us with a talk about the role of women in sport. It was a great talk, the company was good and the food at “Le Bistro Beaumartin” was wonderful.

It is a monthly event, at a different venue each time and given the fact that it is right in the middle of our holiday season it was a bit quieter than usual. The chat, therefore, was mainly around holiday plans and keeping our work places cool.

It struck me just how much many of us are needing a break right now. We need the sun and some heat to warm our bodies up after a long winter and a cool spring.

I realised that it can also be a stressful time for many women. Firstly, there is all the planning that goes in to preparing to get away.  Next the delegation of work and tasks to other colleagues, the clearing out of emails and finally the dread of how full our in box will be on our return.

Many of the women last night spoke of how it is difficult when other colleagues are on holiday. For them, there is extra work to do and many decisions are on hold and don’t get made until the full team is back. I understand that this can be frustrating and annoying. Plus it can be worse if you head off on your holidays early in the season when everybody else still has theirs to look forward to, the result you need another holiday to recover. Conversely, if you are at the tail end you are often exhausted before you go.  So you arrive at your final destination desperate to chill out only to realise it takes a few days to relax as you are suffering from adrenal exhaustion.  Not to mention the worry and anxiety about what you should have remembered to do before you left.

And yes it’s the same every year!

Summer is supposed to be a time when we change our pace, rejuvenate, bask in the sun, enjoy brighter mornings, take advantage of lighter nights, have barbecues, meet friends over an early evening glass of wine, take a stroll or whatever.

So maybe it is time to think about your pace and to take time to enjoy the change in tempo. If this looks like a challenge for you and you know how your typical pre holiday pattern will look then book in for a Kinesiology “balance” to prepare you for the pre and post holiday season. Enjoy!
